UMCG

started the Department of Human Movement Sciences (HMS). A strategy to conduct human movement research through a technically advanced research environment in order to promote education in the field of human movement.

Virtual Reality

Research into motion is essential for the further development of society. It is therefore an area of focus that receives considerable investment. Knowledge transfer between the business sector and research institutions is crucial and presents opportunities for both parties.

Pro Systems, in collaboration with ProCare, developed a Virtual Reality CAVE as an effective tool for such research. This virtual space features 3D projection walls and floors where various simulators can be placed, such as the wheelchair ergometer.

Whether it's improving the performance of wheelchair athletes at the Paralympic Games or optimizing the daily technique of a wheelchair user, the wheelchair ergometer enables scientifically valid measurements.

The four high-end projectors, each with a 4K resolution, create a stereoscopic 3D projection environment that fully immerses the user in a virtual world. The advanced Vicon motion tracking system, combined with ProCare's software, ensures the correct perspective for the user. This, combined with a Surround sound system, results in an effective instrument for conducting motion science research.
